The cause to all your problems.

I think this is the best video to describe me as an artist. I love the experience the city presents in people, and I love all the lights, design and color that is thrown at your face. As an artist, I try to create things around those three aspects, loud colors, bright lights and unique design. This film is exactly that, and I dig it that.

Second Hand Smoke

This film is my favorite, the sound didn't turn out so that's why I didn't use it as my final. I really like the lights, and the black pauses in it.

Love love me

I like this film, because it takes a lot of different angles on pictures, turning and twisting them, to see what they look like at different angles. I like this film, because I explored a lot while making it, seeing what looks good and what doesn't.

Mr. Elliott

This film is short and sweet, but I think it turned out the best with sound matching up. I like it because of the sense that the sound matches up to perfectly.

The plan

I plan on gathering my images from three spots, through out the day. They will all be on North: North and Farewell, North and Murray and lastly North and Lyanhoe. I'm choosing this spot because I'm going to create a film by showing night life and city life, and the experience and the feeling both have to offer. This cross section is full with bars, restaurants and shops that people are coming in and out of all day, and I feel like I would get the most action and promising material from this spot.

When I take images I am going to do it on a weekend, where I can go sit in all three spots for 30 minutes and capture images using the same angle, location and picture. I will do this at different parts of the day, and than take my images and collide them together to create a film.

When I start to record I will do the same strategy, I will only take sounds from those three areas. All the sounds I record will be sounds that I feel as if capture the feeling that, that spot has to offer at the time, to try and convey to my audience the experience that the east side has to offer.

If you would like to see my map, on where I walked and recorded sound and images click here.
Questions that came up while I was on my drifts were these:

1). What is the difference in night life and day life on the eastside?
2). What buildings are more crowded in what time of the day?
3). what would it look like if I kept a camera rolling on the same spot all day? How would the day evolve?
4). What type of people are walking around the streets on Farewell where the bars are at 12PM and 12AM?
5). Is there any areas that are more secluded at night than it is during the day?
6). If I sat at the bus stop 21, on north and farewell, and had my microphone running, how would the sounds vary from 12PM and 12AM?
7). How does the feeling of the city change from night to day?
8). How can I capture that difference, and that feeling through sound and images?
9). Is there anytime during the day where the eastside is remotely still?
10)How does Milwaukee night and day life vary from other cities?

The assignment

1.    Describe two situations that aggravated, bothered, shocked or otherwise stressed you during Drift 1 or 2. (Please note that the situation CANNOT be technology-related.)

a.    What got to me the most for my drift 1 and 2, is not be able to create my project myself. As an artist I don’t want to be told how to create something and when to create it. I like to feel things out, and figuring what worked and what not as I go. I don’t like it when people tell me “Take a picture, but only of things that are round”, for me this just makes me extremely mad, I want to take a picture of something I want, when I want to, and how I want and than make something out of it. This part of the assignment frustrated me the most, because I felt limited.

b.    I just moved from Milwaukee from Minneapolis, and than I got this assignment where I had to go get lost in Milwaukee alone, while recording things. This scared me SO much, because all I could think about was “great I’m going to be lost in Milwaukee and I’m going to get mugged”.

2.
2. Describe, with details, two situations during Drift 1 and/or 2 in which you felt unusually peaceful, at ease, or contemplative.

a.       For my drift two, I decided to walk in the city and the east side f Milwaukee, and for me this is the place I feel the most comfortable and safe in. I know my way around, and I know all the bus routes. As I was walking I had my ipod blaring and I was listening to some rad tunes as I was walking the streets of Milwaukee, and it felt great.

b.       For drift one, I did some recordings in the store Greenfield’s, and when I got in there, the employees were helping create sounds and were interested in my project, so I sat there and hung out while explaining what I was doing and running around the store recording sounds with the employees.

3.

3. Describe three surprises or unexpected situations you encountered on your Drifts and in the days that followed. The surprise could stem from your expectations that conflicted with "on the ground" realities, cultural or social issues of which you were previously unaware, feelings and reactions that you did not expect to have, appearances and soundings of things you did not expect, good or bad outcomes of "on the spot" decisions you had to make, or the discovery of "deeper" realities in the materials you brought home. (Again, skip anything technology-related!)

a.     Well, my friend Lisa came with me on my drift one, and she kept on asking me record a toilet, and I kept on saying no because I thought it would be a stupid sound. I than did it to make her shut up, and I found that the toilet was the best sound!

b.       I was surprised on how well people reacted to me on my drifts. Personally if I saw some girl walking around recording things I would have thought she was a creep; but a lot of people got involved and helped me try and find sounds and help me records things better.

c.       I thought that I would get alt of material from the city, but I actually learned to my surprise that the actual city life bored me and I had no material that I actually liked that came from the city.

4.
4. Describe your favorite experience, situation, place, or recollection from either of your Drifts. Be specific about what happened, how you felt, how you reacted, and why you think this particular experience affected you so much.

a.    My favorite experience had to be my Greenfield’s experience. All the employees in there were extremely nice and understanding. They all wanted to use my recorder and see how it worked, they all wanted to help me find sweet stuff to record and they all wanted to learn how I made my microphone. It felt awesome, because I felt like I was getting a lot of great material and a lot of help, because I had no idea what I was actually doing.
