1. Describe two situations that aggravated, bothered, shocked or otherwise stressed you during Drift 1 or 2. (Please note that the situation CANNOT be technology-related.)
a. What got to me the most for my drift 1 and 2, is not be able to create my project myself. As an artist I don’t want to be told how to create something and when to create it. I like to feel things out, and figuring what worked and what not as I go. I don’t like it when people tell me “Take a picture, but only of things that are round”, for me this just makes me extremely mad, I want to take a picture of something I want, when I want to, and how I want and than make something out of it. This part of the assignment frustrated me the most, because I felt limited.
b. I just moved from Milwaukee from Minneapolis, and than I got this assignment where I had to go get lost in Milwaukee alone, while recording things. This scared me SO much, because all I could think about was “great I’m going to be lost in Milwaukee and I’m going to get mugged”.
2.
2. Describe, with details, two situations during Drift 1 and/or 2 in which you felt unusually peaceful, at ease, or contemplative.
a. For my drift two, I decided to walk in the city and the east side f Milwaukee, and for me this is the place I feel the most comfortable and safe in. I know my way around, and I know all the bus routes. As I was walking I had my ipod blaring and I was listening to some rad tunes as I was walking the streets of Milwaukee, and it felt great.
b. For drift one, I did some recordings in the store Greenfield’s, and when I got in there, the employees were helping create sounds and were interested in my project, so I sat there and hung out while explaining what I was doing and running around the store recording sounds with the employees.
3.
3. Describe three surprises or unexpected situations you encountered on your Drifts and in the days that followed. The surprise could stem from your expectations that conflicted with "on the ground" realities, cultural or social issues of which you were previously unaware, feelings and reactions that you did not expect to have, appearances and soundings of things you did not expect, good or bad outcomes of "on the spot" decisions you had to make, or the discovery of "deeper" realities in the materials you brought home. (Again, skip anything technology-related!)
a. Well, my friend Lisa came with me on my drift one, and she kept on asking me record a toilet, and I kept on saying no because I thought it would be a stupid sound. I than did it to make her shut up, and I found that the toilet was the best sound!
b. I was surprised on how well people reacted to me on my drifts. Personally if I saw some girl walking around recording things I would have thought she was a creep; but a lot of people got involved and helped me try and find sounds and help me records things better.
c. I thought that I would get alt of material from the city, but I actually learned to my surprise that the actual city life bored me and I had no material that I actually liked that came from the city.
4.
4. Describe your favorite experience, situation, place, or recollection from either of your Drifts. Be specific about what happened, how you felt, how you reacted, and why you think this particular experience affected you so much.
a. My favorite experience had to be my Greenfield’s experience. All the employees in there were extremely nice and understanding. They all wanted to use my recorder and see how it worked, they all wanted to help me find sweet stuff to record and they all wanted to learn how I made my microphone. It felt awesome, because I felt like I was getting a lot of great material and a lot of help, because I had no idea what I was actually doing.
